A Carp Fisherman's Sea Journey

The rods are out!
19.00
I'm down on the beach at Sandwich Bay. I've got two rods out. The short rod's about 40 yards, the longer rod about 60 yards. Just trying to feel my way into the session. Sea fishing is a bit of a culture shock. The tackle, I'm having great difficulty in using, it's so different to carp fishing.

Both baits are a combination of a Bluey fillet and a whole squid (Baby). The Right-hand rod nods gently. I have no idea if it's a fish or the tide. it's almost at low water. Sand has been revealed at the bottom of the shingle bank so I'm waiting on events. The sun is starting to dip down over the shingle bank behind me. We'll see what happens during darkness.

Whole squid and Bluey fillet
Mmmm.... lovely!

It's exactly low water and there shouldn't be any tide running I imagine but the rod tip continues to nod. Is this normal?

19.45
Well knock me down with a feather. I've only gone and caught one. A bass of 34 cm long. Not big enough to be a Keeper but a very good capture as my first sea fish.

Schoolie Bass

Recast the left-hand rod - the long-range rod. It's been out there over an hour so I thought it was about time to reel it in. Bait almost gone.
Night-fishing on Sandwich Bay beach

And another bite to rattle the root tip. This time it's a Whiting. I threw it back straight away.

Whiting - I caught these right up to the surf-line.
21.29
The tide's about halfway up now. Don't seem to be getting as many Whiting knocks - I'm just having one now.

22.07
It's two-and-a-half hours until high water. I'm still getting Whiting and I've gone over to whole squid as my preferred bait.
Dogfish. I had a few of these. Skin like sandpaper. You could strike a match on them!
22.55
Two Whiting at once one on the top Hook; how's that for efficiency.

23.31
1-hour from high tide. Suppose I should be thinking about packing up. This is fortuitous almost out of bait, squid having proved it's worth. All the bites have come on the inside just a few yards off the surf.

00.07
Once again on the Whiting. Two fish at once. But it's time to go.
